Well here’s a surprise. Since Sony launched its flagship Xperia Z5 late last year we weren’t expecting a new smartphone at MWC 2016, but here are the X and XA series and both have some stand out features.
First up is the improved battery life. By Sony’s accounts, smart battery management can improve the life of the battery to deliver up to two days of charge.
The manufacturer has enlisted the help of US company, Qnovo and its Adaptive Charging technology. This partnership should see batteries lasting twice as long.
Next, Sony called on Sony camera engineers to help develop Predictive Hybrid Autofocus. According to Sony this technology “lets you choose your subject and then predicts its motion”.
While that does sound a bit like the camera is sentient, the idea is that users will be able to take action shots and snap pictures of things happening without worrying about focus.
Full specifications for both the Xperia X and XA follow below.
Xperia X | Xperia XA | |
Display | 5inch FullHD, TRILUMINOUS display | 5inch HD display with Mobile BRAVIA engine 2 |
CPU | Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 1.8GHz | MediaTek MT6755 2.0GHz |

Battery | 2 620mAh | 2 300mAh |
OS | Android 6.0 | Android 6.0 |
Primary camera | 23MP | 13MP |
Secondary camera | 13MP | 8MP |
So on paper, it looks like the XA will be Sony’s low price offering. Though there is no official pricing just yet the smaller camera and internal storage mean that the XA will likely cost less than the X.
The Xperia X seems to be a toned down version of the Xperia Z5 Compact. There is a 23MP snapper but as we’ve already pointed out, the camera is a slight upgrade from the Z5 family. Both handsets will come in single and dual-SIM variants with the dual SIM Xperia X housing 64GB of internal memory.
Looking at the battery size we are somewhat doubtful that we’ll get the two days of life Sony is promising but perhaps Qnovo really has helped improve the battery life, though only a hands on test will tell.
Two new mates for Sony
The manufacturer also announced a wireless ear-piece called the Xperia Ear. Using Bluetooth or NFC, users will be able to connect wirelessly to their smartphone. By pairing the Ear with an app, users will be able to get up-to-date information like the weather fed right into their ear.
You can even have text messages recited to you or have the Ear make calls for your just by asking.
The final surprise Sony had for MWC 2016 was the RM-X7BT in-car Bluetooth hands-free kit. Made up of an adapter which will transmit audio and recieve voice commands from a commander unit, the kit is said to make operating a phone while driving safer.
The kit will be able to access smartphone apps, make calls and even recite text messages so your hands remain firmly on the wheel.
All of these new products are expected to be made available in the northern summer of this year and pricing is yet to be confirmed.
