How to renew your vehicle licence online in Cape Town

If you live in Cape Town, you can wave goodbye to long frustrating queues and paperwork when renewing your vehicle licence, as the city’s municipality has is offering an easier way to do all that online.

The City of Cape Town’s eservices portal provides the platform for you to do this, in addition to viewing and paying your rates and services accounts.

What you’ll need

To get started with online vehicle licence renewal, you’ll need a valid email address, scanned photocopies of your ID book/card, and proof of residential address as well as your vehicle registration details.

According to the city, you need to follow the steps below to complete your renewal:

1. Visit the City of Cape Town website
2. Click on the eservices button (bottom right of screen)

3. Under the Motor Vehicle Licensing option, click on ‘register’

4. Once you’ve registered, you will receive an email with your temporary login and password

5. Log in to the eservices site and select the service activation tab

6. Next to the vehicle licensing field, click on ‘activate service’

7. Complete the once-off registration fields. Then upload a copy of your identity document/passport and proof of address and submit your application

8. Click on the motor vehicle licensing (top left of screen

9. Select ‘renew motor vehicle licence’

10. Complete the vehicle owner and vehicle registration details applicable and submit

11. You will receive an email with a payment advice, reflecting the licence fee due, the city’s banking details and a nine-digit reference number within two working days

12. You can make payment via EFT or bank deposit. Remeber to add the relevant vehicle licence renewal reference number when you’re making the payment.

The city said it will process post your licence within five working days.
