Raspberry Pi 3 – just the facts

To celebrate the launch of the original Raspberry Pi four years ago, The Raspberry Pi Foundation has released the newest little PC on the block – the Raspberry Pi 3.

The big news about the new model is not just a myriad technical improvements, as you’d expect, but also the same $35 (R563) as the existing Raspberry Pi 2.

While the Raspberry Pi 3 is already available overseas at that price, we’ve tracked down some rough prices locally. Local site Pi Shop has it listed for R749 but is not available to buy yet. If you want to buy in bulk, IT shop RS is selling them for R642 each, or R626.40 each if you buy more than five units. Because of this variety, we’re trying to track down the exact RRP and will update the story once we have it.

Specs

  • CPU – 1.2GHz 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU
  • Memory –  1GB LPDDR2
  • GPU – VideoCore IV 3D graphics core
  • Connectivity –  802.11n Wireless LAN, Bluetooth 4.0, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)
  • Dimensions – 85 x 56 x 17 mm
  • Ports – 4 USB, 40 GPIO pins, Full HDMI, Ethernet, Combined 3.5mm audio jack and composite video, Camera interface (CSI), Display interface (DSI), Micro SD card slot (push-pull)
  • Power – Micro USB socket 5V1, 2.5A

Facts

  • Replaces the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B but Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+ and Raspberry Pi 2 Model B will keep being produced “as long as there’s demand”
  • A+ model variant coming later this year, no exact date yet
  • The existing Raspberry Pi Model A+ will continue to be the “entry-level Raspberry Pi” until the Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+ is released
  • BCM2837-based Compute Module 3 to be released in the following months, no exact date yet
  • Completely backwards compatible with Raspberry Pi 1 and 2

//Update – local maker and friend of the site Tom Van den Bon pointed out that you can also pick one up from the Pi Factory for R798. While that is more expensive than the other two, this store has it available to buy right now.
