Next big PS4 firmware update brings Remote Play to PC and Mac

The PS4’s next major update will include the ability to use the console’s Remote Play function on both Mac and PC. This news comes courtesy of a post on Sony’s PlayStation blog.

The beta for the PS4’s 3.50 firmware update kicks off tomorrow and Sony’s blog post reveals the following:

“We’re bringing PS4 Remote Play to Windows PC and Mac. This feature won’t be available to test in the beta, but you can look forward to it soon.”

This essentially means that the 3.50 update will allow PS4 owners to stream games to Macs and PCs, although players will have to wait until after the beta to try it out. It looks to be similar to the streaming functionality between the Xbox One and PCs that Microsoft offers its console players – but naturally, there’s no ability to do the same for a Mac.

PS4 currently offers the Remote Play feature for both televisions and the PS Vita, but connectivity issues have hampered its popularity among players in the past.

Sony Worldwide president Shuhei Yoshida announced as far back as November last year that Remote Play for Mac and PC was in the pipeline.

Alongside the promise for Remote Play on Macs and PCs, the new update will include a decent range of new features – most of which can be tried out in the beta. These include Dailymotion being added to the Share function and some nifty social features such as making play dates and the ability to appear offline when you’re online – handy if you’re watching or playing and don’t want to be bothered.
