You’ll soon be able to buy a brand new Sega Mega Drive… for R1 500

Here’s some unexpected news sure to delight retro gamers: from March 2016 you’ll be seeing brand new Sega Mega Drives on retail shelves for the princely sum of R1 499.95.

The Sega Mega Drive, or Genesis depending on what part of the world you’re from, was first released in 1988. This version about to go on sale isn’t the exact same mode, but a rather nifty upgrade.

While it does accept cartridges made for the original console, you’ll find 80 built-in games. The list of games we have been told about are as follows (use Ctrl + F to see if your favourite is here):

  • Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
  • Alien Storm
  • Altered Beast
  • Arrow Flash
  • Bonanza Bros.
  • Chakan: The Forever Man
  • Columns
  • Columns III
  • Comix Zone
  • Crack Down
  • Decap Attack
  • Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
  • Ecco
  • Ecco Jr
  • ESWAT: City Under Seige
  • Fatal Labyrinth
  • Flicky
  • Gain Ground
  • Golden Axe
  • Golden Axe II
  • Golden Axe III
  • Jewel Master
  • Kid Chameleon
  • Motal Kombat I
  • Mortal Kombat II
  • Mortal Kombat III
  • Ristar
  • Shadow Dancer
  • Shinobi III
  • Streets Of Rage 1
  • Streets Of Rage 2
  • Streets Of Rage 3
  • Sonic & Knuckles
  • Sonic Spinball
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Sonic the Hedgehog II
  • The Ooze
  • Vectorman
  • Vectorman II
  • Virtua Fighter II

Throw in two wireless remotes and that’s the package you’re buying.

Now, that price, at about a quarter the asking price of a current PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, we think it’s a little steep. Sure, this is probably the easiest way to play these games that’s 100% legal, but almost all of them are available in some fashion, most of them playable (for free) through your browser.

This new Mega Drive is going to have to do a lot to win us over. Hopefully updating the games to work better with more powerful hardware and at higher resolutions, combined with a controller that is comfortable to use and it might justify its price. Once we have one in our hands we’ll let you know, because we’re quite curious ourselves.
