Don’t just look at pictures of people’s food, watch it made live on Nom

YouTube co-founder Steve Chen has just opened a new site aptly called Nom, which allows anyone to live-stream cooking videos.

Think videogame streaming service Twitch but with food instead, and you have Nom. While Twitch has strictly stuck to videogames, it has in recent years moved to include live art sessions; food was never really on the cards.

At the moment you can watch streams directly on the official Nom site, or from the iOS app.

The team behind Nom is varied indeed, with former YouTube engineering lead Vijay Karunamurthy as CEO and Chen as chief technical officer. Stranger still is the investor line-up: Korean pop star PSY, actor/singer Jared Leto and chef Corey Lee have all put their money behind this project. Other American chefs from around the USA have also partnered with the service.

Just as Twitch grew and expanded its scope, Nom already has plans outside of simply letting people watch others cook: the service would like to give food blogs a new platform, stream taste tests and use input from the audience to refine the content.

With funding in the range of $4.7 million (R71 million), Nom does seem like a good bet,  as the food community on almost every social media platform (professional and otherwise) is quite large. With food being one of humans’ three basic needs, it’s not surprising that it’s so popular.

Before you join us watching foodies make food on Nom, here’s a related video from a popular TV show to enjoy.
