The Cyanide & Happiness card game Kickstarter raised almost R50 million

A little over a month ago, insanely popular web comic Cyanide & Happiness began a Kickstarter campaign to turn their Random Comic Generator into a card game called Joking Hazard, and the internet flocked to it.

Originally aiming for a (comparatively modest) $10 000 (R150 000), the campaign came to a close last night with 63 758 backers pledging $3 246 588 (R49 771 492). Not all that surprising when you consider that the comic is so beloved that the initial goal was reached in less than half an hour, and the creators have used Kickstarter in the past to successfully fund their animated series The Cyanide & Happiness Show.

To tempt people to suppoort the campaign, its stretch goals were turned into a pseudo-videogame where reaching certain pledge amounts, sharing on social media and completing certain “quests” would make the campaign rewards better.

One such example of a quest was aptly named “Fart Dads”, in which fans were tasked with writing the word “Fart” on their father’s heads and sending a picture of the feat to team. It was so popular that there’s even a website (fartdads.com) where people are still submitting the silly pictures despite the campaign being over.

The final task for fans was to beat the final “level” of the stretch goals and defeat a boss to unlock absolutely all possible rewards, which was reached after beating five consecutive levels of the game.

While we do love the absurdity of the comic, we’re still wary of this game. It borrows a lot of gameplay elements from the king of the party games Cards Against Humanity while looking to add very little to the formula. It wouldn’t be the first card game based off of an internet comic to be a disappointment; Exploding Kittens – a game from the comic The Oatmeal, was lambasted as being a disappointment.

Hopefully the solid humour of Cyanide & Happiness can break through and provide a great game. Hopefully.
