OpenWeb wants you to bid for your bandwidth

Everyone loves a good bargain, and if you can get bandwidth for a lower price than normal, what have you got to lose, right?

That’s the thinking behind OpenWeb’s latest offering, in which it wants ADSL subscribers to bid on a price they are willing to pay for certain internet packages.

The company’s ‘Bid for Bandwidth’ promotion is essentially an auction which allows the highest bidder to get bandwidth at the price it wants to pay monthly.

By going to the auction website, you need to fill in all of your personal details, and then tell OpenWeb the price you are willing to pay for a specific package. As an example, the 10Mbps Home Uncapped is normally priced at R399, but you could bid to pay R390.

If you are the highest bidder for that package and OpenWeb accepts it, you’ll get R9 off.

“A bid is for the monthly fee one pays for data. If your bid is accepted, the sale is immediately concluded and the price will stay locked in for the life of the account,” explained CEO Keoma Wright.

But don’t worry if you aren’t the highest bidder, as OpenWeb will give you one more shot at it.

“If the bid is rejected, clients will receive a notification and be offered one more opportunity to increase the bid. If the bid is then accepted, OpenWeb will automatically create the account.”
