Samsung wants to turn your tonally-challenged humming into a song

I don’t know about you, but I have found myself humming a tune, not knowing if it is entirely made up or if I heard it on the radio two days ago.

Well, hopefully Samsung’s latest creation will be able to help with that. Called Hum On! (it’s a bit of a silly name if you ask me), its sole purpose is to turn your unidentifiable humming into an actual song.

It doesn’t need to be something that you already know, and it actually works best if you hum something completely original.

“Think of it as a musical translator of sorts. The app records hummed melodies, instantly transcribes them into musical notation, and then plays it back to you using your preferred arrangement style: R&B, classical or rock,” Samsung explains.

Once that is done, you probably want to share your ditty with the world, and of course the app will allow you to do just that.

“You can then share your own unique songs via social media, or use them as background music in videos without having to worry about copyright infringement.”

But how is all of this done, you might ask? Well, thankfully Samsung has an explanation for that as well.

“The app utilises analysis software to detect the pitch and duration of a user’s voice, and machine learning to create a suitable accompaniment in the same way a musician considers melody and chords. Compared to similar existing programs, Hum On! is incredibly simple and user-friendly,” it says.

So now, when you have a tune in your head, you don’t need to rush off to the recording studio to pen your latest creation. The app will allow you to instantly record and score your hum, so it is a bit of a win-win if you are a musician with some serious humming skills.

Availability and exactly which Samsung phones will be supported has not been made know.
