Xbox One’s cross-network play kicks off with Rocket League

Cross-network play has been one of the most requested features from gamers to the Xbox teams for some time now, and it seems like they got their wish.

The functionality would allow Xbox One gamers to play multiplayer gamers on the same server with PC gamers (for now) on Windows 10, creating a larger player pool. Cross-network with PlayStation 4 gamers is still to be determined.

But don’t think that you will be able to go into The Division’s Dark Zone with the goal of hunting down PlayStation or PC gamers, as game developers need to code the cross-network play into the game.

“In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well. This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks,” explained Chris Charla Director of ID@Xbox.

He stressed the point that it’s up to game developers to support this feature, and added that Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players.

But what will the first game be to support the functionality? Well, Rocket League of course!

“We’re thrilled to confirm that Psyonix’s Rocket League will be one of the first games to take advantage of this new capability by enabling cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well.”
