PlayStation’s VR headset is out this October

2016 seems to be turning out to be the year that virtual reality takes off – or at least when it becomes a lot more prominent.

We’ve heard of the pricing for HTC Vive, Samsung’s Gear VR is already in widespread use and the Oculus Rift headset is set to become commercially available this year sometime. And now Sony has announced the price of its PlayStation VR virtual reality headset – and it’s a doozy.

For the low low price of just under R8 000 (!), gamers in select countries can pick one up in October this year. The release window is a bit later than Sony initially hinted at, but the company said that it needed extra time to make sure everything is in good working order.

“PlayStation VR represents a transformative experience in gaming, and we wanted to take the time needed to launch with a broad variety of content and a sufficient supply of hardware. We are beyond excited to deliver to consumers the amazing experience that PS VR offers,” Sony wrote in a blog post.

If you are worried that there might not be any VR content available at launch, fear not as 230 developers are building content for PlayStation VR, from large studios to independents to two-man teams.

“We expect to have more than 50 games available from launch in October 2016 until the end of the year. Of course, the full promise of PlayStation VR will continue to grow over time as talented developers create new experiences and new genres that wouldn’t be possible outside of VR.”

Sadly, South Africa isn’t on the list of countries where PlayStation VR will arrive when October rolls around, as Sony said the standalone PlayStation VR headset will be launching in UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Australia, New Zealand, Poland, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Russia and Czech Republic.

The second we hear about PS VR coming to SA, we’ll let you know. Meanwhile, is anyone (apart from Deon) actually excited about this?

[Edit: Oh, and if you’re wondering what the music playing over the video is, it’s a track called Kuaga by Pierce Fulton. You’re welcome.]
