Posts on your Instagram feed will soon stop appearing in chronological order

Soon you won’t be able to see Instagram posts in chronological order on your feed anymore, as the photo-sharing service is ditching this in favour of an algorithm that prioritises posts differently.

“You may be surprised to learn that people miss on average 70 percent of their feeds. As Instagram has grown, it’s become harder to keep up with all the photos and videos people share. This means you often don’t see the posts you might care about the most,” Instagram said in a blog post, using good old social media marketing terms we’ve come to be familiar with.

“To improve your experience, your feed will soon be ordered to show the moments we believe you will care about the most,” the company added.

Photos and videos will appear according to the top posts you’d be most interested in, your relationship with the person or brand behind the account and the timeliness of the post.

This does not come as a surprise as Instagram is naturally following in the footsteps of its parent company Facebook. As it did before with ads, Instagram is just following Facebook’s lead.

“We’re going to take time to get this right and listen to your feedback along the way. You’ll see this new experience in the coming months,” Instagram concluded.

Presumably, the new algorithm will come with a way to opt out of it the same way you can on Facebook, but this hasn’t been confirmed yet.
