Apple announces the iPad Pro they should have announced a year ago

While Apple’s iPhone SE is a time warp back to 2013, the latest iteration of the iPad Pro is one we feel should have been on shelves already.

Let’s face facts: as powerful as the iPad Pro is, its massive 12.9inch display means it’s bulky, and closer in size to a notebook than a tablet. So when Apple unveiled a smaller iPad Pro with a 9.7inch screen last night, our interest was piqued.

Apple’s Senior Vice-President of Worldwide Marketing, Phillip Schiller, opened old wounds when the firm once again touted the new slate as a replacement for the PC.

“The 9.7-inch iPad Pro has a new Retina display with True Tone technology, four-speaker audio system, [and] blazing fast A9X chip. It is the ultimate upgrade for existing iPad users and replacement for PC users,” Schiller said.

The specifications of that A9X chipset are yet to be disclosed, though we do know that it is capable of a dual-core configuration running at a speed of 2.26GHz. There is also 4GB of RAM so applications should load and run speedily.

Apple also announced a new feature for the iPad Pro’s display, True Tone technology, which reads the colour temperature of the ambient light and adjusts the white balance of the display accordingly.

This means that when you open your mail in semi-darkness, you shouldn’t be blinded by a flash of blue/white light, but a more toned-down spectrum. Couple this with the Night Shift feature of iOS 9.3, which adjusts the screen’s colour according to the time of day, and users should experience less eye fatigue, though we can’t say your battery life will be get that break.

The new slate will also house a 12MP iSight camera that isn’t all that different from the 12MP shooter we saw in the iPhone 6s. Users will be able to shoot and edit UHD video on the iPad Pro while the 5MP front facing FaceTime HD camera will make selfies and video calls look a whole lot better.

Looking at it, this smaller iPad Pro is actually a good runner-up to the iPad Air 2, though in terms of pricing you may want to hold off on selling your old slate for a while.

The iPad Pro 9.7inch with only Wifi connectivity will cost $599 (R9 144) for the 32GB iteration, $749 (R11 434) for the 128GB and $899 (R13 724) for the 256GB.

If you need connectivity on the move the iPad Pro with Wifi and LTE connectivity will start at $729 (R11 128) for the 32GB version, $879 (R13 418) for the 128GB and $1 029 (R15 708) for the 256GB.

While the rest of the world can expect this smaller slate to hit shelves on 31st March, no official street date or price has been announced for South Africa.
