Top 10 apps: Games

Don’t Tap the White Tile
Android / iOS
Free

The game of many names, you might find it as Piano Tiles or Don’t Tap The White Tile but the premise is the same, whatever you do, don’t tap the white tile. The game is a simple matter of tapping the buttons that appear on screen in sequence but as the difficulty and speed increase so to do you. There are seven modes to choose from with Arcade+ giving you a “remix” of the popular games. Each mode has its own difficulty and high score so you can keep track of how well you’re doing. This free game is really great if you need to wait for a doctors appointment, just keep the volume down or risk the stares of strangers.

Ingress
Android / iOS
Free

The world we live in is just a facade, beneath the surface a battle is raging between The Enlightened and The Resistance. This is the world that Ingress draws you into. The simple act of walking around your town is turned into all out war when you compete against the rival faction for key landmarks that earn your faction points and take over the world.

The game is highly addictive and will have you running around your town collecting points and landmarks. An activity based game could not be anymore fun, well until you recruit your friends and compete against each other.

The Walking Dead: Road to Redemption
Android / iOS

Free

The Walking Dead is one of the most-watched television shows currently being aired around the world, so it is really no surprise that a game has been made around it. The franchise has seen a number of console and PC games, but Road to Redemption takes things to mobile phones. The game puts you in charge of building up your community as you fight off zombie hordes in a turn-based combat fashion. It features some of the characters from the franchise, but it is mainly new survivors. It’s hugely entertaining, and is sure to keep you busy for days on end.

Lifeline
Android / iOS
Free

When thinking about mobile games, players often expect to get great graphics and engaging voice acting, but it is possible to have a fantastic gaming experience with neither of those. Lifeline is a text-based game (a title that makes exclusive use of text to convey a story), and takes place in space.

It places you in the shoes of a radio operator who is the only point of contact for an astronaut which is stranded on a strange planet. The game will task you with making decisions for the astronaut, guiding him to safety and eventual retrieval. But be aware – he can die, and then you’ll have to start again.

Star Wars: Uprising
Android / iOS
Free (with IAP)

Star Wars meets Diablo in this entertaining action RPG that pits custom-created Resistance heroes against the forces of the Galactic Empire. The Empire is reeling in the aftermath of Darth Vader’s death, and have locked down the Anoat sector; naturally, this inspires an uprising, in which players take part. Controls are surprisingly good for a mobile game of this scope, and the loot-drop system will have players eager for just one more level to see if they can find that one piece of gear that will complete their loadout. There’s even the option to take part in large-scale, sector-wide multiplayer battles with other players. Awesome.

Minions’ Paradise
Android / iOS
Free (with IAP)

The Minions from the Despicable Me movies are having a whale of a time on a cruise ship… that is, until it crashes into an island and leaves them all stranded. But, in true Minion fashion, they simply adapt to their new environment and set about building their own slice of paradise.

Well, sort of – that’s actually up to you, the player. Minion’s Paradise is a town-building strategy game that challenges players to gather resources and build things to keep the Minions happy. There are tons of mini-games to play as well, including one where you have to collect shark teeth, and you’re not actually forced into paying for anything to enjoy the game. In all, a lovely little distraction.

Hearthstone: Heroes Of Warcraft
Android / iOS
Free (with IAP)

Hearthstone is arguably one of the most beautifully crafted games in recent memory. It’s achingly simple to play, yet, for those who are prepared to put the time in, it’s also monstrously deep and fiercely compelling. If you’ve ever played Magic: The Gathering, you’ll know what you’re in for. If not, picture a turn-based card battle in which players deploy spells and monsters against each other, chipping away at their opponents life points until there’s a winner. With tons of cards available for purchase – with in-game gold or real-world money – players can go as deep as they like.

Her Story
iOS
R99.99

On the surface, Her Story seems less like a game and more like a series of interactive clips, but don’t be fooled; this game is as engrossing as any decent thriller. The game takes the form of a selection of interview snippets of a woman whose husband has disappeared and is later found murdered.

The player is tasked with sifting through her testimony and piecing together exactly how much of her testimony is true and what actually happened to cause the death of her husband. If you want to awaken your inner detective with a compelling and twisted investigation, download Her Story now.

Plants VS Zombies 2
Android / iOS
Free (with IAP)

PopCap’s tower defence game is a couple of years old but it still stands tall among the games available on smartdevices. A meticulously well built game, PVZ2 tasks players with planting shrubs that boast different attack and defence powers to ward off streams of zombies, which vary in toughness and special abilities. Like Hearthstone, players can pony up money to buy special seed packets or they can close their wallets and grind away. PopCap is still adding new content to this game two years after its release so veterans won’t feel shortchanged. For newbies, trust us when we tell you this is one of the best games ever made for any gaming platform.

Lara Croft GO
Android / iOS
R99.99

This turn-based adventure starring the most iconic female character in gaming is something of a reimagining of Tomb Raider. In it, players guide Lara along pre-set pathways, navigating routes past giant lizards, snakes, treacherous rock faces and the odd bottomless pit.

The key to success here is based on trial and error as the player guides Lara past hostile creatures and unstable terrain to reach the end of each level. Each level ups the ante as the developers toss more creatures and pitfalls into the mix. The overall difficulty isn’t too taxing, but that’s the only minor disappointment in this otherwise swoon-worthy game.
