EVGA debuts its first notebook and you can overclock it

EVGA is better known for its graphics cards more than anything else, which is why the news at CES this year that firm was working on a notebook was so interesting.

The notebook which has been christened the SC17 Gaming Laptop was revealed along with a swathe of big numbers, starting with its price. At $2 699.99 (R40 428.70) its aimed squarely at the enthusiast PC gamer and it delivers, on paper at least.

At the heart of the SC17 is an Intel Core i7 6820HK Unlocked CPU. Yes, Unlocked, which means that you can take the stock 2.7GHz and crank it up to 3.8GHz. Backing up that CPU is 32GB of G.Skill DDR4 memory, which can also be overclocked to 2666MHz.

Impressively, the SC17 features a 17.3inch UHD display though we aren’t so sure that the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M included in the notebook will be able to keep up with the UHD at 60fps demands enthusiast PC builders want.

That said, the GPU is fitted with 8GB of GDDR5 and perhaps this will help things along.

While we’re nit-picking, it would have been nice to see this notebook fitted with G-Sync even if just to minimise screen-tearing and give users the option to turn V-Sync off completely.

What is nice though is that EVGA have included a 256GB m.2 PCI-E SSD as well as a 1TB 7200RPM SATA HDD.

EVGA has also fitted the SC17 with two USB 3.0 ports as well as one USB Type C port, while external displays can be connected via an HDMI or DisplayPort cable.

The SC17 is a uni-body design which is, interesting and presumably done to stop enthusiasts from fiddling with the innards. And that’s where we have a problem.

The fact that this is aimed at enthusiasts should mean that parts can we swapped in and out at will, this particular notebook would require a whole new machine to be upgraded and something tells us that this won’t sit well with the folks who are constantly trying to squeeze more fps out of their GPU.

As this is EVGA’s first notebook we won’t shoot the horse out of the gate and we’ll give it a chance, and at 26.6mm thick we can’t help but be a little impressed at what the firm has created.

Pre-orders in the US open mid-April but there is no word on whether we will be seeing these notebooks in South Africa just yet.
