SA-made mobile game will determine how good your hearing is

Over 3 million South Africans suffer from impaired hearing and to raise awareness on this issue, ehealth startup hearScreen will be launching a mobile game on World Hearing Day this Thursday.

The National Hearing Test App, hearZA, is designed to detect signs of hearing loss and help sufferers seek help as soon as possible.

“Unidentified hearing loss has far reaching consequences including communication difficulties, less energy and a higher risk of depression and dementia,” hearScreen said in a statement.

hearZA will allow you to test your hearing by listening to simple digits in the presence of background noise. Once you’ve completed the game, you’ll be scored according to your responses, with a low score indicating a problem that needs attending to.

“The smartphone-based National Hearing Test is the first of its kind. Not only providing accurate testing but encouraging hearing health awareness through a gamified(sic) user-experience,” hearZA lead-inventor, Professor De Wet Swanepoel said.

If your score is low, hearZA will link you to the closest hearing healthcare providers to you based on geolocated facilities across the country provided by the South African Association of Audiologists and Speech Language and Hearing Association (SASLHA).

The first 12 people identified with disabling hearing loss through using hearZA will receive a sponsored audiological evaluation at their closest provider and hearing aids donated by Sivantos and Oticon, if indicated.

Look out for hearZA on Google Play and the iTunes App Store this Thursday.
