Quickly and easily smooth your 3D print with some heat

Posted in June last year, the video below offers a simple way to get rid of any roughness that accompanies your 3D print.

The example here is some residue left over from a printed support structure. While you would usually get rid of this with a solvent, some elbow grease and sandpaper, the creator of the video has a better way.

A bit like magic, isn’t it? The thermal transfer tool, a type of simple branding iron quickly melts raised surfaces and leaves a clean finish. To stop the plastic burning a light dimmer switch was added to the tool’s circuit.

If you want to do this yourself, you’ll need to track down one of the thermal transfer tools and modify it. Alternatively, picking up a cheap soldering iron to experiment on would work well.

If any of our readers gives this a try, we’d love to see the results! Send it to us at makers.htxt, on Facebook or Twitter!
