Would you play a videogame in which you are a homeless person?

We thought a game based on the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War was the strangest title we’d find on Steam, but something popped up on Greenlight recently that takes the cake.

Hobo: Tough Life is an RPG in which you play a homeless man trying to survive.

The game has apparently been in development since December of 2015 and the brainchild of two Czech developers: T4J and Moravia Tales. The only other game we managed to find from the pair is called Spycon – a management spy game that isn’t available on Steam and is equally obscure.

Regardless, looking at the description provided by the developers themselves, and there’s promised RPG mechanics such as “tough gameplay with survival elements” and “non-linear gameplay with replaying possibility”. There’s no playable version of the game available to us at the moment, so we have too look at a trailer for some insight.

We don’t really know what to make of Hobo: Tough Life. We fully support games as an art form, which means they should look at serious issues such as homelessness. And we could see this title portraying the homeless as what they are – human beings who have fallen on hard times but are constantly the targets of hate.

…On the other hand, it’s entirely possible that this is all a joke in poor taste. This game may entirely exists as a trailer and some images thrown on Steam thanks to its none-existent quality control just for the laughs. Surely the game’s title points towards this, but we’ll give it a pass for now until we see more of it.

We’re trying to contact the developers at the moment to get their thoughts on the matter and hopefully get a hold of some code (which may be fruitless because of the games minute development time).

So what do you think? Tasteless, offensive joke or a legitimate game that is asking a question about a serious social issue?
