M1 traffic to become more hellish as southbound lane closures come in May

Joburg motorists who are already having a hard time dealing with the M1 northbound roadwork lane reduction may not be happy to hear that operations on the southbound side are about to begin.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has announced that the M1 southbound between the Killarney and St Andrews off-ramps will be reduced to two lanes from May to December 2016.

The JRA first announced in November last year that the multi-million rand roadworks would commence on the highway as part of a revamp programme.

The northbound closures officially took effect in February this year.

“Joburg road users are adapting well to the temporary changing road conditions and are starting to use alternative routes to travel between destinations in the city,” JRA acting MD Mpho Kau was quoted n Business Day Live.

The JRA has provided an alternative route map you can use if you want to avoid the M1 and you can keep an eye on the JRA Twitter account and website for updates to stay informed about disruptions in time.
