Huawei promises “best smartphone photography” with new P9 flagship

Once again, the rumour mill was spot on in guessing that Huawei’s latest flagship to grace the world would be the P9 and even more correct was the fact that it would house two cameras created in partnership with Leica Camera AG.

What the rumour mill didn’t know is that there is also a bigger, Huawei P9 Plus.

Since the camera is the star of this show let’s take a look at it, or rather, them. There are two sensors and RGB sensor will capture images in colour while a black and white sensor will capture the detail of the image.

The end result as claimed by Huawei, are images with exceptional colour, depth and detail.

One RGB, one black and white, both stamped with the Leica name.
One sensor is RGB, one is monochromatic, both stamped with the Leica name.

An easily adjustable wide-aperture means that users will be able to get creative with their images and create bokeh, which according to the Wikipedia defintion is “the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens.”

“Leica and Huawei share an uncompromising commitment to imaging excellence, and our partnership will put outstanding photography into the hands of more consumers around the world,” Leica Chief Executive Officer, Oliver Kaltner was quoted as saying.

Of course, a smartphone isn’t just about a camera though and while the specifications aren’t terrible we are interested to see how the P9 competes with something like the latest Samsung flagship, the S7 edge.

The P9 features a 5.2inch Full HD display powered by the latest 64-bit Kirin 955 ARM-based processor clocking in at a speed of 2.5GHz while a 3 000mAh high density battery fuels everything.

The P9 Plus has a larger 5.5inch display and a 3 400mAh battery. The most tempting reason to consider the P9 Plus is probably in the charging port which offers dual-IC Rapid Charge. According to Huawei a 10 minute charge will give users six hours of talk time.

For some reason, we see a hardcore battery test of the P9 Plus coming to htxt.africa soon.

So when is it coming and how much will it cost? Unfortunately local pricing is not available just yet and whether South Africa will have it at the same time as the UK, which is around the middle of May, is unclear at this stage.
