Home Affairs’ newly-launched online portal goes completely dark

The Department of Home Affairs launched its online portal (or e-channel, as it calls it) today, which allows South Africans to apply for Smart ID cards and passports.

But even though its launch, which featured a visit from President Jacob Zuma, is barely hours old the project has been hit with several snags.

The online process is currently accepting applications from SA citizens between the ages of 30 and 35, but nobody has been able to even register to apply.

Clicking on the dedicated link, you have to insert your ID number, followed by some personal details. But once you hit enter to complete the registration, many users have received an error – and can’t go any further.

Many users got the same message during different application process, but the most common break seems to occur after one enters their personal details.

While the issue persisted for most of the morning, it now turns out that the whole application website has been taken offline.

The project, which the department described as a move to a more technological and smarter way of carrying out operations, was first piloted at the Standard Bank and FNB headquarters in the Joburg city centre in August and July respectively.
