Almost 80% of SA registered voters are under 30 years old

Almost 80% of 26.2 million South Africans registered to vote in the upcoming 2016 Municipal Elections are under the age of 30, according to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

The commission announced the voter registration turn out, noting that the nation’s youth for responded positively to the call to register. The total number of registered voters makes up 77% of the South African population eligible to vote.

Of the new registrations, 52.5% were women compared to 47% men.

KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest voter turn out at over 1.1 million, representing 30% of the total registration weekend activity for the entire country, followed by Gauteng at 696 252 voters and the Eastern Cape at 512 655 voters rounding out the top three.

The IEC’s target to register one million new voters was exceeded by 30%, having registered 1.3 million people.

Over the two weekends, a total of 1 384 254 new voters were added to the voter’s roll bringing the total number of voters to 26 296 601,” said IEC Chief Electoral Officer, Mosotho Moepya.

More than 6.6 million voters reportedly visited their voting stations over the two registration weekends, including 3 581 540 during the last weekend from 9th to 10th April.

“This is almost two and a half times more activity than in the two registration weekends for the 2011 Municipal Elections,” Moepya said.

In the 2011 Municipal Elections, 23 654 578 had been registered to vote.

If you haven’t registered to vote, you can still do so during office hours at your local IEC offices countrywide, until the Municipal Elections are proclaimed by the Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) in May.
