If you’re one of the millions of players who enjoy Blizzard games, you’ve probably noticed that the last several hours have been somewhat rubbish.

This is because Blizzard has been dealing with a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack against internet service providers, which started interrupting player connections to its games via the Battle.net gaming client around 6 hours ago.

The games affected were Hearthstone, Diablo III, World Of Warcraft and Starcraft 2.

Naturally players became rather peeved and took to social media and Battle.net’s forums to vent their frustration. Blizzard responded on twitter saying that it was aware of the problems and was monitoring them.

If you have your credit card details stored in your Battle.net account, don’t worry: Blizzard says that since the ne’er-do-wells responsible for this hack were simply spamming bad requests at servers; user account information has not been breached.

We logged into Battle.net to try and fire up the games and can report – at the time of this writing – we could log in to Diablo III, World Of Warcraft and Starcraft 2. However, we couldn’t connect to Hearthstone after repeated attempts. If the problems persist there are going to be a lot of angry Hearthstone players – 30 million by last count [UPDATE: 11:05am Hearthstone is back up and running! Woo-hoo!]

Hacker group Lizard Squad claimed responsibility for attack. In the early hours of this morning (local time) it posted this tweet:

Shortly thereafter, the account claimed the following:

According to Venture Beat, Lizard Squad’s account also posted pictures of hackers breaking into the private email accounts of a few Blizzard employees.

This isn’t the first time the group has attacked a gaming company. Lizard Squad claimed responsibility for taking down the PSN and Xbox Live during Christmas back in 2014, knocking both networks out for 24 hours.

Here’s hoping normal service on Blizzard’s games will be resumed as soon as possible. In the meantime, if you’re a Hearthstone player and you have nothing to do right now, why not check out our coverage of the new expansion that’s in the pipeline for the game: Whispers Of The Old Gods.
