…and now Huawei has a VR headset as well

Yes you read that right – Chinese phone-maker Huawei is also throwing its hat into the Virtual Reality headset ring.

The Chinese company unveiled its P9 flagship smartphone last week, but the Shanghai launch on Friday night had a “surprise” announcement – its own virtual reality headset, called Huawei VR – which we only found out about on Saturday due to the time difference between Shanghai and here.

Huawei plugged the headset as “the world’s first 360° visual/sound field synchronous mobile VR”, and added that it can be adjusted to between 0 and 0.700 degrees of myopia, which means that myopia sufferers won’t need to wear glasses with it.

To make the offer more alluring, the Huawei headset will offer over 4 000 free movies, over 40 free games, along with over 350 panoramic images and over 150 panoramic tours, which we presume will be made available via Huawei’s online store. We’re not sure if it’ll all be available to South Africans, though, content licensing being what it is.

The key thing here is that it works completely differen- oh no wait, it doesn’t. It works pretty much the same as every other mobile VR headset out there, where you simply pop your mobile phone in front of the headset and it’s good to go.

Whether you call Samsung’s designers and engineers incredible visionaries or arrogant tech developers, the smartphone and technology giant at least had the foresight to make a virtual reality headset before it was cool. That’s so hipster of them.

Samsung’s Gear VR hit the market about a year ago with the launch of the Galaxy S6, and it seems other mobile phone makers have been playing catch-up ever since. Two other mainstream desktop gaming projects, Oculus’s Rift and HTC’s Vive, have of course also helped to promote VR.

Sony also has a VR headset, and so does LG. Everybody and their horse seems to have one, and naturally there will be a Johnny Come Lately – in this case, Huawei.

While we haven’t had any hands-on time with Huawei’s headset yet, we’re still pretty confident that Samsung’s Gear VR will prove to be the best mobile VR headset in the long run, especially as it’s now compatible with the brilliant Galaxy S7.
