Gauteng #Admissions2017 site sees over 5 000 successful applications 10 min after switch on

Just 10 minutes after Gauteng MEC for education Panyaza Lesufi flipped the switch on the #Admissions2017 website this afternoon, over 5 000 parents had successfully applied for a school place for their child in 2017.

The MEC had been busy as early as 2am this morning working on making the site go live at 8am – the initial time set by SITA, which had taken over the hosting of the servers from the department.

Due to tremendous traffic and fears over SITA’s system crashing, the servers were then reallocated to Vodacom, which reportedly hosts some of the country’s major banks on its servers.

The site finally went live at 2:30pm. Now, the system is said to be able to handle 20 000 visitors per second and not more than that.

By the time Lesufi had turned the site on, he reported that 18 000 parents were already on the site minutes after.

Many parents have expressed great frustration at all the problems, with some even personally going to the Gauteng education head offices to demand an explanation.

Lesufi relayed his sincere apologies to the people of Gauteng and all parents for the inconveniences caused and added that he is confident that the site will not crash again as Vodacom’s servers are accustomed to hosting large websites.
