Eskom’s first prepaid meter installations phase in Sandton and Midrand almost complete

Eskom has just a few more households to go before it completes the first phase of smart prepaid meter installations in Sandton and Midrand.

The power utility began the project on 1st March, with the aim of having 6 000 households converted from post paid meters.

Yesterday it announced that 5 932 had been installed by the end of March. The conversions of meters to prepaid versions will resume in July, once Eskom has upgraded its online vending system.

“In Sandton and Midrand, the plan is to have all 32 885 of domestic customers with smart meters installed and converted to prepaid meters by the end of the 2016/17 financial year,” the company said.

Over 40 000 split prepaid meters in Soweto, despite protests from residents opposing the system, while 13 000 meters have been converted to prepaid mode.

Eskom added that it saw a R33.63-million improvement of revenue collection between uly 2014 and 28th February 2016 in the township after it installed and converted customers to split prepaid meters.
