Mr. Robot’s second season premieres in July

Hollywood gets the depiction of hacking terribly wrong for the most part, but techie geek show Mr. Robot gets it spot on – and the second season is officially set to kick off in July.

USA Network’s dark new drama about the machinations of a socially awkward (and somewhat autistic) hacker will premiere on 13th July, and the network has promised it would tackle a host of relevant topics in the new season.

“Following the events of society’s 5/9 hack on multi-national company Evil Corp, the second season will explore the consequences of that attack as well as the illusion of control,” USA Network said in a press statement.

Previously, show creator Sam Esmail said that the second season would include the recent Apple-FBI saga.

“What’s weird is we were already talking thematically about privacy, and then this whole thing with Apple and Tim Cook happened,” he said during the Mr. Robot panel at SXSW in March.

“We talked to our FBI consultant, and their view is that encryption should allow for this sort of third-party side-door thing. I think it’s a really important issue, and I’m not sure people really understand the nuances,” he explained.

The show has been praised for its realism when it comes to hacking and the techniques used, so much so that internet security company Kaspersky Lab commented on it.

“There’s none of the usual Hollywood nonsense like projecting equations on people’s faces, it’s all like in real life,” said Kaspersky Lab’s Sergey Golovanov.

With so much happening in the tech space and so many contentious security and privacy issues in the limelight at the moment, we’re betting season 2 is going to be an absolute cracker.
