You can now sign up for The Elder Scrolls: Legends beta

If you’re one of the millions of players who enjoys a bit of the old Hearthstone from time to time, but feel that being addicted to just one strategy card game isn’t enough, rejoice!

The Elder Scrolls: Legends, Bethesda’s attempt to eat into Blizzard’s audience, has just announced it’s taking sign-ups for the game.

Announced last year at Bethesda’s first ever E3 keynote, Legends looked like a riff on Hearthstone’s card battle game in that it featured monsters, heroes and spells taken from the lore of Bethesda’s most successful fantasy series.

However, a quick look at the beta’s trailer reveals that The Elder Scroll: Legends might be a bit more of a complex beast than Hearthstone.

While Legends ‘borrows’ Hearthstone’s initial structure in setting up a game (players start off with a small hand and one Mana Crystal Magicka, the playing board is split down the middle into two sides called ‘Lanes’. Both of these Lanes seem to confer special conditions on the battle depending on the Rune at either side of them.

Furthermore the Heroes on either side of the board – controlled by the players – have Runes that surround their portrait. According to the trailer, if you take enough damage one of the Runes will shatter and you will draw a card that may help you turn the tide of battle. At the time of this writing we’re not steeped enough in Elder Scrolls lore to speculate about what the Runes on either side of the board and the Hero portraits may do.

Those differences aside, The Elder Scrolls: Legends has a lot in common with Hearthstone in that it contains Solo, Vs and Campaign play and that it’s going to be a Free-To-Play game – and we’re betting that it’ll come stacked with content you can shell out real-world money for.

If you want to sign up for the beta, just head along to Bethesda.net and log in with your account. We should point out though that once you’re signed up, Bethesda.net will let you know that you can increase your chances of being selected if you agree to receive news and updates from Bethesda. More junk mail makes you a more likely candidate, apparently…
