Top Gear trio of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May have all invested in a service called DriveTribe.

A report by The Verge compares DriveTribe to a service like Twitch, but for car enthusiasts. According to the report, the service will have various “tribes” that people can join. Think of it like a car club, only this is online.

These tribes will be captained by content creators, of which Clarkson, Hammond and May will be three. The teams reportedly invested heavily in the service during Series A of the investor call.

The trio will work with editorial staff to create content for the site but DriveTribe hopes to lure other motoring-related content creators away from services like YouTube and Facebook.

This is an ambitious project especially with behemoths such as YouTube already giving content creators a way to not only produce and share content, but earn money (if they get enough views) as well.

At the moment DriveTribe is hard at work putting the technological framework it needs in place for its launch later this year. The service hopes to have 60 employees by the end of the year with 20, who comprise mostly of engineers, already working under the brand.

The fact that the former Top Gear presenters feel its worth investing in also may point to the fact that this isn’t just a fly-by-night website that seems great in theory but never makes it to execution.

Then again, you could argue that their specialty is cars, and not spotting the next big thing on the internet. We’ll just have to keep an eye on DriveTribe and see what comes of it when Spring rolls round.

And for those that are wondering, Clarkson, Hammond and May are all reportedly still working on a show for Amazon, DriveTribe is a separate project they just all happen to be investing in.
