Hackers leak info of 1 million members of “Beautiful people only” dating site

A US dating site that lets members vote for others to join based on their looks was given the middle finger when hackers leaked the personal information of one million users.

According to Wired, BeautifulPeople which describes itself as the largest internet dating community exclusively for the beautiful, was the victim of a hack.

Now, the data of millions of its users is currently for sale on the black market.

The database was discovered by security researcher Chris Vickery in December last year, while looking through a database manager called MongoDB.

“When that type of thing comes up and it’s called ‘users’, you know you’ve hit something interesting that shouldn’t be available,” he told Wired.

Upon being informed that it had been hacked, BeautifulPeople tried to secure its database, but it was too late as it had already been acquired by an unknown source.

Users who are affected in the data leak are those who signed up on the site before July 2015, when the hack happened.

This hack is very reminiscent of last year’s massive Ashley Madison hack, where over 39 million people’s details were exposed.

“A trained monkey could have protected [this database],” Vickery said. “That’s how easy it is to protect. It’s an incredible oversight, it’s massive negligence, but it happens more often than you think.”

BeautifulPeople is yet to officially comment on the matter.
