City of Joburg wants to give 25 000 residents free access to online learning by June

The City of Joburg is on a mission to have more than 25 000 residents hooked onto elearning in all its libraries by June this year, edging the city closer to being a world class smartcity.

Joburg currently has free internet and WiFi access at 66 public libraries, with a total of 22 297 users accessing elearning through its eWorld public workstations, up from 15 989 in the second quarter of 2015 and 4 769 in the first quarter.

Registered elearning users account for 6 693 of the total. The total number of user hours almost doubled to 43 506 during the same period.

Through eWorld, residents have the chance to access the city’s Massive Open Online Varsities (MOOV) programme announced by Mayor Parks Tau early last year, where they can take a number of free digital courses in order to improve their skills.

There are currently 3010 users registered on MOOV, up from 1 390 registered in the 2015 second quarter.

As a result of indices of theft being reported, the city said it has had to beef up the level of physical security at elearning sites and that this will be completed by the 30th June this year.
