Latest Anonymous hack steals 1TB of data from the Kenyan government

Leaderless hacker group Anonymous started an online campaign this past February it called #OpAfrica, targeting African governments over corruption, internet censorship and child labour. Two months down the line, it claims to have hacked Kenya’s Foreign Ministry.

The 1TB of data it managed to obtain has reportedly been placed on the Dark Web, and according to Hack Read, it contains confidential data.

“The dumped data contains confidential and non-confidential PDF and .docx files from the ministry server including email conversations, security related communication, international trade agreements and letters discussing the security situation in Sudan where government forces are fighting the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA),” it said.

There are apparently also email conversations about weapon clearance in Namibia, Kenya’s dealing with the Middle Eastern nation of Oman, and ironically, a letter from Information Communications Technology (ICT) about hackers trying to gain access to staff accounts.

An (anonymous) member of Anonymous confirmed the data breach to Hack Read in an exclusive conversation.

“We have 1TB of data but at the moment, we have leaked just one portion of it. In few days you will receive full disclosure of the data – We the Anonymous will stand against corruption, child abuse, and child labour! The government of Kenya should have expected,” the  anonymous Anonymous member said.

In February this year Anonymous carried out several hacks on the continent, and even targeted South Africa’s Department of Water Affairs.

The attackers got hold of a treasure trove of data that included names, emails and ID numbers of over 5 800 government employees. They also got hold of phone numbers, dates of birth, addresses, departments where people work, job titles, and passwords.
