Get from point A to B in an electric car with UberGREEN in Joburg

Starting next Monday, Joburg citizens have a month to find out what it’s like to ride in an electric car with Uber’s its UberGREEN initiative.

The cab-hailing app has partnered with BMW and Nissan to offer the option to riders while helping reduce CO₂ emissions in Johannesburg.

Between the 9th May and 3rd June, request a BMW i3 or Nissan LEAF electric car at uberX prices, so it burn a hole in your pocket.

Before the pilot officially kicks off, Woolworths WRewards members will be among the first to have the option to request an UberGREEN ride in these vehicles for a limited period.

“In a world where mobility adds to the carbon emission problem, we at Uber are eager to provide alternate options. Uber is passionate about making rides better and more sustainable and this partnership is a step towards making changes for the good of our environment,” Alon Lits, General Manager of Uber Sub-Saharan Africa, said in a statement.

“In order for the momentum of electric mobility to increase partnerships like the one with Uber are essential to expose more consumers to the viability of electric vehicles and alternative mobility options,” added Tim Abbott, Managing Director of the BMW Group South Africa.

UberGREEN will only be available between 7am and 7pm during its pilot and it may be restricted to certain areas of Johannesburg, especially during rush hour.

To request an UberGREEN vehicle, you’ll have to follow these steps:

  1.    Open the Uber app between 9th May and 3rd June 2016 between 7am and 7pm
