New USSD service launched for foreigners in SA

From tomorrow, foreigners living in South Africa will have access to all the legal and public services info they need to navigate life in the southern-most part of the continent via a new USSD service.

Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR), an organisation which provides free legal services to vulnerable and marginalised groups affected by xenophobia, with support from the Praekelt Foundation and the US Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration, is preparing to launch the service, called Help@hand.

Help@hand will provide foreigners with a way to stay informed about their legal rights in South Africa and is a platform to report any issues they may be facing.

Info on permits, health, education and unlawful arrest will be provided through the service. Users will also be able to report corruption, xenophobia and unlawful arrest.

Since Help@hand is a USSD service, it’ll work on any phone no matter if it’s a dumb, feature or smartphone and will be available in English, Kiswahili, Somali and French.

Help@hand will be launched at the LHR offices at 95 Frere Road, Bezuidenhout Valley, Johannesburg, tomorrow.
