Microsoft’s free Windows 10 upgrade offer ends in two months

If you’ve been indecisive about taking the plunge and installing Windows 10 or sticking with an older version, then perhaps the threat of having to pay for the upgrade will help you reach a decision.

We’ve always known that Microsoft’s free Windows 10 upgrade offer was limited to a year, and after that you would have to buy the upgrade to enjoy things such as Cortana, Continuum (when it lands, eventually) and DirectX 12.

But Microsoft has confirmed in a blog post that the free upgrade offer will end on the 29th of July.

Let this serve as your first official warning from us here at htxt.africa that if by that date, you haven’t taken Microsoft up on offer you will have to hand over a wad of cash we’re sure you’d prefer used for things like fuel, or food.

The Microsoft Store currently lists Windows 10 Home for R1 399.00. Pro goes for R2 299.00. Yoh.

The upshot for anybody who hasn’t upgraded and won’t upgrade, is that the “Get Windows 10” reminder should eventually disappear after that date: WinBeta says Microsoft has indicated that after the 29th of July the “Get Windows 10” app will be disabled before it is eventually removed from PCs around the world altogether.

Unfortunately, however, Microsoft also warned that the switchover won’t be instantaneous and said, “Just as it took time to ramp up and roll out the Get Windows 10 app, it will take time to ramp it down.”

Have you upgraded to Windows 10 yet, or will the threat of having to pay for it spur you along? As always, let us know in the comments.
