Stephen King’s The Dark Tower begins filming in Cape Town

The film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower has begun shooting and imagine our surprise when we heard this is taking place, not in in the US or New Zealand, but Cape Town, South Africa.

Actress Katheryn Winnick, whose role in the movie is not yet clear, posted several images to her Instagram account showing off some locales in Cape Town as well as (what looks to be) a trailer with The Dark Tower title printed on it.

Winnick is known for her role in the TV show Vikings. If we have to guess as to who (or what) she’ll play in this movie, we may be spoiling the story for you.

We can’t even guess going off of race, as they’re mixing that up in the casting too. The main character, Roland Deschain (of Gilead, last of the line of Eld etc) was white in the book, but he’s being played by Idris Elba.

Another star on the film is Matthew McConaughey playing the mysterious man in black sometimes called Walter Padick.

We’re massive fans of this series here in the office (no, that’s just you, Clinton – ed), and we’re ecstatic to finally seeing it get the silver screen treatment. King himself described it as a mix between The Lord of the Rings and old Western movies. It’s as awesome as that sounds.

We’re also trying our damnedest to make our way onto that set to see what’s going on. If we make it we’ll let you know, but, for now, thank you for the read and we wish you long days and pleasant nights.
