While the 1983 film WarGames may have billed Matthew Broderick as its lead, the real star was the IMSAI 8080 microcomputer. Now you can have your own 3D print of this magical machine.
That statement and the files you’ll need both come to us thanks to the RabbitEngineering. On Thingiverse you’ll find the project as well as this description from the creator:
“….as we all know the real star of that movie was David’s impressive IMSAI based desktop system – 8080 computer with FDC-2 disk drives and the 212A modem and keyboard, all running on a Electrohome 17″ monitor – with speech synthesis no less. My first movie crush. Relive those nostalgic moments of young love/global thermonuclear war with this mini machine set! Mini 3D models of Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy sadly not included.”
It must also be noted that this is not a 1:1 scale prop. Check out the image below and keep in mind that the silver circle is a coin. Luckily, this means that it won’t take up much space on your desk or shelf, and you can always make the files bigger yourself if you have the skill.
To get the result you see in the image above you’ll need to print in multiple colours and then do some light assembly. You’ll also need to print out the logos and screen display, as they’re decals.
If you don’t want to print this yourself, RabbitEngineering has an Etsy store offering the completed prop for $30 (R450). Just keep in mind that the store is located in the USA, so printing the free files are probably your best bet.
