South African ad agency takes home People’s Voice award at the Webbys

Back in April we wrote about Johannesburg-based advertising agency Ireland/Davenport being nominated for a Webby award.

Well, while the company didn’t take home the Webby, it walked away with a People’s Voice award in the Social Media Campaigns category for Advertising and Media – which is still a pretty big deal.

Ireland/Davenport launched a campaign for The Salvation Army last year, playing off of the blue/gold dress concept to highlight domestic abuse.

“Ireland/Davenport’s timely hijacking of a silly meme for a cause that has global resonance was covered by more than 1 300 media outlets around the world, including TIME, CNN, Fox News, the Telegraph, the Boston Globe, Washington Post, and The Guardian. It resulted in over 640 million media impressions, more than 1.3 million social media engagements and ultimately had an estimated reach of an incredible 5.3 billion,” the company said in a media release.

Webby winners are selected by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences (IADAS), while The Webby People’s Voice Awards winners are determined by the online voting from the public.

So in essence, even though it didn’t get the actual Webby, Ireland/Davenport proved the most popular among those whose who voted, so that is still a win in our books. And that is no small feat, as the organising company highlights that the Webby People’s Voice Awards garners millions of votes from all over the world.

Just in case you were wondering, some of the big winners included Kim Kardashian West for the first-ever Break the Internet Award, Kanye West for Artist of the Year, Jessica Alba for Entrepreneur of the Year, and satirical news website The Onion for its Lifetime Achievement.

There are a lot of winners, and if you’d like to go through them you can find the full list on The Webby website.
