Sunrise calendar app will stop working in August

It happens far too often that when a company gets acquired by a bigger entity, it is only a matter of time before the little guy gets closed down. Sadly, this is exactly what is going to happen with hugely-popular calendar app Sunrise.

Microsoft made a play for Sunrise last year, and today the company announced that it will be closing the proverbial doors on Sunrise come August – and the Sunrise team has already been reassigned to working on Microsoft’s Outlook.

“The entire Sunrise team is now working side-by-side with the Outlook team and it’s a thrilling moment for us to work on an app of this scale. Unfortunately, as all good stories go, there’s a sad bit to it: we’re not able to support and update Sunrise anymore,” Sunrise’s management said in a blog post.

The team added that going forward, there will be no more no new features and no bug fixes, and the app will be removed from the apps stores.

“For this reason, we’ll be removing Sunrise from the app stores in the next few days. On August 31st, we’ll officially shut down the app and it will stop working all together.”

For those that loved the app and the team behind it, the company hopes that its followers will tag along to Outlook.

“As heartbreaking as this sounds, we’re hard at work bringing the magic of Sunrise to the Outlook apps, with all your most loved features – interesting calendars, event icons and calendar apps. We’re confident you’ll be able to find our special touch there too.”

In February last year,  Rajesh Jha, Corporate Vice President with Outlook and Office 365, made the announcement about the acquisition.

“This is another step forward on our journey to reinvent productivity and empower every person and organization to achieve more. Today’s acquisition of Sunrise, our recent acquisition of Acompli, and our new touch-optimized universal Office apps for Windows 10 all exemplify Microsoft’s ambition to rethink the productivity category,” he said at the time.
