WhatsApp brings video calling to Android, but you can’t use it yet

After months of rumours circulating about WhatsApp bringing video calling to the service, it looks like the instant messenger is gearing up to the speculation to bed.

The app’s latest Android beta version features the option to make a video call instead of a voice call.

Now, instead of a call automatically going through when you tap the call icon in a chat, an option to select a voice or video call pops up.

The catch however, is that you can’t use the feature yet. When tapping on video call, a message pops up telling you “Video Calling isn’t available at this time”.

It’s not clear when the feature will be live in the Facebook-owned app’s beta version or when it will be coming to the Google Play Store.

Video calling has been available on Facebook Messenger since May last year, so it’s only natural that WhatsApp follow in its footsteps, since they’re both owned by one company.

It will also do a lot to boost the service’s popularity among its one billion users worldwide, many of whom are probably fans of cheaper means of mobile communication through WiFi enabled platforms like WhatsApp.

Just a few days ago, video calling was reportedly released for WhatsApp’s iOS beta version.

These updates follow rumours of the introduction of voicemail and call back features for times when you’ve missed a WhatsApp call that you can access from your notification tray.

If you want the WhatsApp beta version, not that there’s really anything new on it right now, you can download the APK file onto your phone.
