Slab to fab: here’s how far gaming laptops have come since 2006

Just a few short years ago, if you wanted a gaming laptop that consistently ran your games above 40fps, didn’t weigh a ton and required you to drop your detail levels down to just about “wire frames plus greyscale textures” to be decently playable, you needed a time machine to head to the future.

Should you have stumbled across a time machine in 2006 and set it to May 2016, and reached the requisite 141.6km/h (and you didn’t crash into something that wasn’t there in your time upon emerging through the hole you’d just punched in the space/time continuum), you could’ve grabbed one of Gigabyte’s latest gaming notebooks – a P37 or a P35 – headed back to your time, and lived happily ever after gaming in full detail and at 60fps+. All with something barely bigger than two A4 exercise books placed side by side.

Then and now

Just be warned, however: the people of your time would probably lock you up for your insane claims of gaming at 60fps, with details cranked and without producing a ton of noise and heat on a laptop.

And not just that, but one that weighs less than a Great Dane puppy, is thinner than a sandwich and which runs any game in all its glory without any sort of lag or slowdown. And should you show them that it maintains a solid 30fps in any game even on battery power, your credentials as a human being and not some sorcerous wizard from an alternate dimension would be uncomfortably questioned.

Because in 2006, this is what was inside high-end laptops:

Compare that to 2016’s P35 and P37, it’s clear we’ve come a long way since then.

You’d also run the risk of letting your anachronistic super-advanced computer fall into the hands of tech enthusiasts eager to exploit its advances – the Intel Skylake processor’s ability to perform while not using a lot of power or generating significant amounts of heat, for instance, will blow their minds, and who knows how the future would have unfolded then.

How, indeed?

What’s more, the people of your time would probably also not believe that you can have a 15.6-inch or a 17-inch gaming laptop that performs incredibly well for less than R32 000, or that all of this gaming goodness weighs less than 3kg (2.8kg) and is thinner than a modestly-sized novel.

But you know what? As long you had your P37 in front of you and plenty of games from 2016 to play on it, you wouldn’t care what they thought, would you?

Should Gigabyte have piqued your interest and you want to see a bit more about the company and the products it offers, head over to the official Gigabyte website and check them out.

Or, if it’s more info on these two gaming laptops you’re seeking, you can find all of the pertinent info on the P35W v5 here, and the P37W v5 here.

You’re welcome!
