eHome Affairs opens online Smart ID applications to other age groups

The Department of Home Affairs has added another age group to the list of South Africans who can apply for their Smart ID card or passport online via the eHome Affairs portal.

Minister Malusi Gigaba announced in Cape Town today that in addition to 30 to 35-year-olds in Gauteng and Cape Town, those aged between 25 to 40 can will also be able to apply.

At the time of the portal’s launch, the department had said it selected the 30 to 35 age group as part of its pilot and estimates that it could reach as millions within that age group.

The 25 -40 age group will be able to apply from Monday, 23rd May in Gauteng and Cape Town.

“This will add impetus to our resolve of replacing the green ID book with the Smart ID card,” Gigaba said.

Gigaba added that the department is still in the process of finalising its memorandum of understanding with the four banks it’s partnered with to expand applications across the country.

“Home Affairs will enable government to provide service better. We must get it right. This is where we are taking the department,” the minister said.
