Joburg to crown its second #HackJozi million-rand entrepreneur tonight

Tonight ten of Joburg’s most innovative entrepreneurs will know whether or not their startup is worth winning a R1 million cash prize from the city at the #HackJozi Challenge finale.

The top ten finalists, chosen from hundreds of entries sent in between February and March, have already pitched their businesses to a panel of judges who have chosen the winner to be revealed tonight.

#HackJozi finalists were judged on the technical feasibility of their ideas, the scaleability potential and “wow-factor”.

Joburg Mayor, Parks Tau, will be in attendance to award the winner, who’ll walk away with R1 million and two runners up who’ll receive R350 000 each.

The #HackJozi top three will also receive business mentorship on how best to invest their winnings to further develop their ideas.

“We change lives by giving away R1-million to the best and most innovative idea. Judges are looking for the idea that strikes the most potential and the idea that can become a viable business within the year,” said Professor Barry Dwolatzky from the Johannesburg Centre for Software Engineering at Wits University.

“Participating in the challenge has been an amazing experience for me. The mentorship and coaching I received have enabled me to take my invention from a concept to a viable business with a great value proposition,” said Nthando Moagi, founder of LCERT, one of the top 10.

We’ll be there to cover the event tonight.
