Post Office goes digital with new mailing service for important documents

The South African Post Office has launched what may be a way to ensure that important documents don’t get lost and reach recipients on time, with the help of technology.

The Post Office today announced the launch of its eRegistered Mail service, which lets organisations and individuals send important and sensitive electronic documents.

Documents sent through eRegistered Mail have the same legal status as paper-based Registered Mail in terms of Section 19(4) of the ECT Act 25 of 2002, the Post Office said in a statement.

Sending an eRegistered Mail only costs R18.24, which is significantly cheaper than paying for the delivery of legal papers by a sheriff of the court.

Once you’ve sent an eRegistered Mail, proof of delivery and a full audit trail will be recorded and sent to you.

Recipients can respond to eRegistered Mail at no cost. The digital post box used for a mail is also free.

“Access to the system is restricted to ensure protection of data, security and users are authenticated through a username and password as well as digital certificates,” the Post Office said.

It also alleges that no spam and phishing is possible as the owner of the mailbox selects parties from whom he or she wishes to receive mail. But as we’ve come to know with technology nowadays, nothing is impossible.

“With the digital post-box comes a free storage vault upfront where users can safely store important documents. The storage space can be extended if required,” Sapo said.

The service caters for a range of users, whether these are ‘once off’ mail users, small and medium users or institutions that send large volumes of registered documents.

“The SA Post Office is making a determined effort to become digitally-enabled, and it plans to launch additional new and enhanced digital services in the future. The company has started a journey into the digital world and is looking forward to the future where it turns the corner as a revitalised Post Office,” it concluded.
