Transit Elevated Bus wants to reduce traffic by driving right over it

The “Transit Elevated Bus” (TEB) has a unique way of moving people while reducing traffic: it glides above it.

This Chinese invention was shown off at the Beijing Intel High Tech Expo. The bus, which looks like a moving tunnel, seems to run on tracks which can be laid on top of traditional roads, letting regular cars pass by right underneath.

The ability to retrofit existing infrastructure means that the TEB can apparently be implemented in only a year and at a cost less than a fifth of a new subway system.

Engineer in charge of the TEB, Bai Zhiming,  is making these claims, as well as stating that the vehicle can carry 1 200 passengers.

We’d like to take a second to point out some massive flaws we’ve noticed at this point. This looks like  great system when there are regular cars on the road, but what about trucks and other busses? What about bridges and other such infrastructure that wasn’t built with the TEB in mind?

Factoring that in, the claims about the speed and price this has been estimated to implement the TEB seem less plausible.

Regardless, we’re always behind any and all solutions to traffic congestion (and making cityscapes look more cyberpunk). The first tests of the TEB will be carried out in the second half of the year in China, Qinhuangdao City.
