“The significance of the TshwiFi project cannot be accentuated enough. “In order to continue our commitment in ensuring that universal digital connectivity is treated as a basic and fundamental human right, the capital will invest approximately R100 million in this financial year,” he added.

“We also emphasised our commitment to broadband rollout within the capital which will facilitate the installation of fibre networks to far outlying areas of the city,” the mayor said.

“In the years subsequent to the 2016/17 financial year, the fundimg for TshwiFi will emanate from the broadband project which is an off balance sheet transaction with the city entering into an offtake agreement with an appointed service provider and will be implemented through a publuc/private partnership.”

Ramokgopa said the city will continue to mainstream a number of initiatives and serve as Africa’s beacon of excellence in digital connectivity.

The total Tshwane 2016/17 budget is R32.8 billion, an increase of 11% compared to last year’s budget.
