Xiaomi’s Mi 5 goes on sale today

If you are in the market for an awesome little smartphone that costs under R8 000, it might be to your benefit to have a look at Xiaomi’s Mi 5 – which goes on sale today.

The Mi 5 is the follow up to the Mi 4, which blew us away with its great battery life and small price. For the Mi 5, you’re looking at significant performance boost: it comes equipped with Qualcomm’s current-fastest Snapdragon 820 chipset, which will run at 2.15GHz on the 64GB and 128GB iterations and a lower 1.8GHz on the 32GB version.

Unlike its predecessor, the Mi 4 will not be made available in a 16GB variant.

The 128GB will have a ceramic body which is reportedly harder to crack, while the 32GB and 64GB variants will have a curved glass body. Both versions will also house a fingerprint scanner in the “Home” button. Unfortunately the ceramic version will not be available in South Africa.

The Mi 5 boasts 4GB of RAM, and the 128GB model is fitted with a 3 000mAh battery; hopefully that means we get similar battery life to the Mi 4 which lasted 6 hours in our battery abuse test.

The smartphone will be made available at Dion Wired, Makro, Incredible Connection, Takealot, hi-online.co.za and selected Foschini Group stores for R7 999 cash, and can also be ordered through the official mia.africa.com/za portal.

If you want to go the contract route, you can pick up the following packages from Dion Wired, Incredible Connection and Makro:

  • uChoose Flexi 150 at R399/month
  • uChoose Flexi 200 at R499/month
  • uChoose Flexi 350 at R599/month
  • uChoose Flexi 500 at R699/month
  • uChoose Flexi 750 at R899/month
