Vega to offer degree in Game Design and Development

Those in the know estimate that South Africa’s video game industry is worth around R2.6 billion, with a forecast of that growing to R3.6 billion in 2019. That is a lot or money being thrown around for games, so it stands to reason that local tertiary educators like Vega School would make an effort to grab a slice of that pie.

Vega announced today that it offers a degree in Game Design and Development, through the Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences that will start next year.

“Making games is a ‘fun’ science which requires lots of dedication while dealing with complex mathematics, real-time coding, cutting-edge digital art and high fidelity sound. Our programme thus facilitates the development of a well-rounded game designer and developer; with a balance of graphic and visual design for games combined with significant programming and database skills, knowledge and insight that will enable our students to find employment in business enterprises as well as further studies in IT or design,” explained Vega National Marketing Manager, Nicky Stanley in a press statement.

According to the institution, the degree will provide students with the necessary knowledge and expertise to pursue a career in game design and development, allowing them to create gaming content for everything from home consoles and computers and other platforms such as mobile phones and handheld devices.

It explained that “…the three-year degree is industry-focused, and on completion graduates will be well-prepared and qualified with all the knowledge necessary to create two-dimensional and three-dimensional games.”

Vega has campuses in Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town, and if this is something that you’d like to do, you’re encouraged to head over to the school’s website and register your interest.

South Africa’s first accredited course in video game design was launched in 2013 by Friends of Design Academy of Digital Arts.
