Fantasy author Raymond E. Feist will be signing books at ICON 2016

Festivals celebrating geek culture have seen a massive upsurge over the last couple of years, and that makes us very happy. South Africa’s longest-running festival, ICON, is set to return this year, and this time around it has a very special guest.

Twelve-times New York Times bestselling author Raymond E. Feist will be at the festival over the weekend of 24 to 26 June to answer questions from fans, take part in a panel discussion, and he will also be signing some book copies.

The fantasy author has been at ICON in the past, but just in case you don’t know too much about him, the majority of Feist’s works are part of The Riftwar Cycle – which spans over 20 books. According to Wikipedia, Feist has published three non-Riftwar novels, the first of which, Faerie Tale, is a dark fantasy set in the state of New York.

Speaking of large things, this year’s ICON has also moved to the much-bigger Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.

“The increased space provides room for a greater selection of local and international offerings, combining its longstanding much-loved gaming tournaments with a host of new events and attractions,” ICON said in a press release.

This year’s theme is ‘Sci-Fi Adventures’ and there will also be a broadband internet connection hosted by AlwaysOn. It will provide the connectivity for many to connect and share their ICON experiences; it will also be used for hosting the live-stream of the panel discussions – of which Feist will be a part.

“This year’s panel and workshop schedule will be sure to engage and entertain fans with topics covering the length and breadth of popular culture: topics as diverse as tech-savvy parenting techniques; the morals and ethics on display in the hit TV show The Walking Dead; and “Madam & Eve” artist Rico Schacherl gives his insights on the political cartooning landscape,” ICON said.

Oh, and don’t forget about the cosplay, fiction writing, podcasting and workshops on how budding stars can grow their social media presence.
