Björk and HTC Vive partner for world’s first VR album

The cacophonous Icelandic songstress, Björk, has announced that she has partnered with HTC Vive to create a virtual reality album.

The VR Album Exhibition, as it will be known, will form part of an 18-month long world tour that will kick off at Vivid Festival in Sydney this weekend.

At first this seemed like Björk’s attempt at creating something similar to Beyoncé’s visual album Lemonade but the VR experience was created to feature tracks from her latest album, Vulnicura.

To create this VR experience directors, Andrew Huang (for songs Stonemilker and Black Lake), Jesse Kanda (Mouth Mantra), Warren Du Preez and Nick Thornton Jones (who both worked on Notget) were called in to create the visuals and real world assets that will come together as part of the Björk Digital experience.

At the centre of Björk Digital is the VR Album Exhibition which will run on the opening nights of the tour and attendees will be treated to Björk as the DJ (hopefully this means as little singing as possible is involved) and will use HTC Vive headsets to experience the creations of the singer and her posse of directors.

“With Vive we are focused on bringing a fully immersive experience to our users, and this partnership with Björk felt like a really natural fit,” Senior Vice President of Virtual Reality at HTC, Rikard Steiber said in a media statement.

Attendees will also be able to test out the songstresses education app, Biophilia which is meant to teach school children about science, nature, and medicine. As an aside, I do wonder if as part of teaching medicine to children Björk mentions that listening to her shrill tone for extended periods of time can causing hearing problems.

It really was just a matter of time before a musician looked at VR and decided this might make a cool idea for an album and while the idea is extremely awesome, being a person who hits mute when Björk is played makes it tough to get excited about this.

Still, its a cool idea and if musicians can make us a part of their music by letting us walk around them while they play, in a VR setting of course I don’t much care whether it was started by Björk or Breaking Benjamin.
